California May See New Rules for Defensible Spaces

California fire officials are developing new rules that may prevent most plants and combustible materials from being within five feet of homes in fire-prone areas. The initiative, which was supposed to be implemented last year, is currently under discussion by the California State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection. South Lake Tahoe is already implementing strict measures to prepare for the change, requiring homeowners to clear combustible materials from the five-foot zone closest to their homes, including bushes, flowers, wood piles, leaves, sheds, hot tubs, and other potential fire hazards. In 2020, California passed Senate Bill 3074, a law that imposed new defensible standards limiting combustible materials near homes, especially in fire-prone areas.
