Supervisors Approved Reclassifying Sonoma County Park Rangers as Public Officers

Sonoma County park rangers will no longer hold peace officer status and will be reclassified as public officers without primary law enforcement duties in the county’s 55 regional parks. The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 Tuesday to move forward with the polarizing changes. A Sheriff’s Office parks unit has been created to carry out law enforcement responsibilities. The changes will take effect mid-August. Rangers have been a part of the county’s park system since its founding 57 years ago.
