Safety Pushed Heavily as Kids Go Back to School in Sonoma County

With many schools getting back to classes this week, local law enforcement agencies want to remind drivers of traffic safety. Santa Rosa Police say whether you’re a student, parent, or community member, here’s what you need to know to keep our roads, and our kids, safe:

  • Many students will be walking and/or riding bicycles to school.
  • Parents should ensure that children who ride bicycles wear properly fitting helmets.
  • Parents, have conversations with your children regarding the importance of being alert while approaching and entering a crosswalk.
  • Use the buddy system while walking to and from school when possible.
  • Expect heavy traffic back-ups in school zones.
  • Motorists should avoid school zones if possible.
  • Be patient and drive carefully.
  • The first few weeks of school are always extra busy so leave plenty of time to travel.
  • When a school bus stops and its red lights are flashing, traffic approaching from either direction is required to stop.
  • Do not text and drive! Even at a red light, it is a violation.

There will be increase in traffic enforcement on roadways this week surrounding elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the city. Santa Rosa Police Department traffic officers will be enforcing violations such as crosswalk/pedestrian violations, speeding, cell phone and seat belt violations.

In Petaluma, the Petaluma Police Department and the Traffic Engineering Department will be conducting the “Safe Routes to School Traffic Safety Operation” during the first week of the 2024/2025 school year. The operation begins on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 for all Petaluma City Schools. Old Adobe School District, Waugh School District and St Vincent DePaul Campuses. First day of school is different this week depending on the school district.
