State Bill Looks to Overhaul Fire Mapping System

California could overhaul its decades-old fire danger classification system. A bill looks to repeal the current state rules that classify land into moderate, high or very high fire danger. State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant says the legislation would create a singular wildfire mitigation code that would address defensible space, building codes and development standards. He hopes the changes would make the wildfire mapping system more understandable and easier to enforce. Critics of the bill argue it would allow more development and people into fire-prone areas. The bill is currently moving through the State Assembly.
