A Petaluma assisted living facility has been successfully sued over the death of a former resident. The family of Theresa Donahue have been awarded $20.5 million, including $17 million in punitive damages, in a civil lawsuit that accused Muir Woods Memory Care of elder neglect, negligence and wrongful death. The 84-year-old woman died nearly a year after moving out of the home in the Spring of 2021 after falling several times. The Press Democrat reports that the lawsuit alleged deep deficiencies such as inadequate levels of staffing and training fueled in part by “the focus on increasing profits.” The lawsuit was filed in June of 2022 but a verdict wasn’t reached until April of 2024.
