Sonoma County Officially Suspends Ban on Gas Appliances in New Buildings

Sonoma County is suspending its ban on natural gas and propane appliances in new construction. The move comes after the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a federal law overrides such a ban from being enforced locally. The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approved an all-electric building code in 2022, with a few exceptions for secondary units and additions to homes, as well as for homes where alternative energy sources like solar panels won’t work. The city of Berkeley was first, in 2019, when it mandated that most new residential and commercial buildings feature entirely electric utility lines and infrastructure.
