Governor Newsom Signs Bill Limiting Smartphones in Schools

California is the latest state to require schools to limit or ban the use of smartphones. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the law Monday as research shows excessive use of the devices can hinder learning and increase the risk of mental illness. Over a dozen other states have passed similar rules this year. The move comes after the largest school district in the state, Los Angeles, banned smartphones for students in June. The new law requires schools to have a policy in place by July 2026.
