Governor Newsom Signs Law Prohibiting Legacy Treatment From Private Colleges

California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has signed into law a bill prohibiting private colleges and universities from giving special treatment, or so-called legacy treatments, to applicants with family connections to alumni or donors. It takes effect in September of 2025. The law signed by Newsom on Monday aims to promote fairness in the admissions process. The move makes California the second state, after Maryland, to prohibit legacy admissions at private colleges and universities.
