Initial funding for a new mental health program may be decided today. The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors today will decide whether to approve over 280,000 dollars to cover staffing positions and overhead costs associated with implementing the new Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment Court program or CARE. It is a state mandated program to help individuals suffering from severe mental illness, including untreated schizophrenia, and is expected to launch on December 1st in Sonoma County. Those eligible can get a personal plan along with treatment, medication, and housing if needed. Press Democrat reports that the county could receive 40 petitions for the CARE program within its first year.
