Californians may get Dungeness crab for Christmas after all. The commercial crab season could open by December 15th if migrating whales leave crabbing areas. Commercial crabbing season was supposed to start on November 15th for the southern and central coast. In the northern region, north of the Sonoma/Mendocino County line, it was scheduled to begin December 1st. The Northern region was postponed. The decision was aimed at protecting whales and concerns about unsafe toxin levels in some crabs. A reassessment will occur around December 5th to see if the season can start before the holidays.
