The Palisades and Eaton fires are the largest fires on record in the month of January in California history.
The Palisades Fire has burned more than 17,000 acres of land and the Eaton Fire has burned more than 10,000 acres of land, killing at least 5 people. This is also the first time two wildfires of more than 5,000 acres in size are burning in California at the same time in the month of January. From 1950 to 2024, just two fires exceeded 5,000 acres in January.
This comes as the Sunset Fire, a new fire in the Hollywood Hills, erupted last night. Officials are expressing some optimism windy conditions could calm today and allow for progress to be made.
Sonoma County is sending three firefighter strike teams to help battle the wildfires causing widespread destruction in Los Angeles County.
Each strike team includes five fire engines, a leader and up to four firefighters. The first two strike teams were deployed on Tuesday night. Firefighters and equipment being sent come from several North Bay fire agencies.
The Gold Ridge Fire Protection District says about 60 firefighters and 15 engines from the region are currently in Southern California.
