A dramatic incident unfolded Friday afternoon on Highway 101 near Cotati. A driver, whose identity remains unknown, was driving a car that caught fire.
Witnesses report seeing the driver, who was also on fire, exit the vehicle and then shoot himself. Deputies responded to the scene with guns drawn, then pulled the man away from the burning car. He was transported to the hospital with major burns and a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The highway was temporarily closed in both directions due to the incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
