Northern California is getting a new area code, 837, to meet the high demand for numbers in the existing 530 area code.
It’s affecting places like Chico, Davis, Redding and South Lake Tahoe. Starting January 31st, new phone lines may receive the 837 code, and local calls will require dialing “1” plus the area code.
It will not affect the price of calls or coverage areas. Current numbers will remain unchanged.
