Farmers impacted by last winter’s deadly bird flu outbreak in Sonoma County say the federal payments they received weren’t enough.
Following the catastrophic outbreak, eight poultry facilities received a collective total of $10.6 million in taxpayer-financed funds to subsidize their losses. But, a preliminary report from the Sonoma County Office of Emergency Management says losses from the depopulation of birds totaled closer to $22 million.
Several chicken and duck ranchers say the money they received helps but does not come close to covering their losses.
