Kim Navarro, the director of skating at Snoopy’s Home Ice in Santa Rosa, is mourning the loss of her figure skating coach.
The coach was among the 14 skaters killed in Wednesday night’s midair collision between a passenger jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter in Washington D.C.
The group was on the plane returning from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. Navarro, a former competitive ice dancer, is now a coach herself and directs the skating program at Snoopy’s Home Ice.
She attended the championships last weekend before returning to Santa Rosa. Navarro says she also knew some of the other skaters who lost their lives.
