The annual homeless point-in-time count will be conducted in Sonoma County today.
More than 150 outreach workers and volunteers will be counting the total number of people without permanent or livable shelter. Last year, there was an increase in homelessness. The numbers of homeless veterans, people who are chronically homeless and people who have been homeless for more than a year all went up.
This year, county staffers are creating a “by-names list” to maintain a daily, real-time count and detailed information about the county’s estimated 2,500 homeless people.
Officials believe it will provide a more accurate scope of the homeless population.
