Santa Rosa School Closure Committee Finalizes Recommendations

The Santa Rosa school closure committee has finalized its recommendations for school closures, sending them to the district’s board of trustees.

After eight months of analysis, the committee suggests closing two tiers of elementary schools, with Albert Biella, Brook Hill, and Steele Lane elementaries in the first tier. Middle schools ranked for potential closure are Santa Rosa, Herbert Slater, Hilliard Comstock, and Rincon Valley.

At the high school level, Elsie Allen and Montgomery are tied as most likely to close. The recommendations, based on factors like enrollment, cost, and student demographics, aim to save the district at least $11 million over two years.

The board will discuss the recommendations Wednesday and make a final decision February 19th. The committee also presented alternative scenarios, including converting some schools to different grade models, and urged the board to consider program retention and the impact on students and staff.
