Former Sonoma County Supervisor Mike Kearns Passes Away At 78

Mike Kerns, former Sonoma County Supervisor and Petaluma Police Sergeant, has died at the age of 78. Kerns is perhaps best known for his role as the public information officer during the 1993 abduction of Polly Klaas, a role he handled with empathy and strength.

Before entering politics, Kerns served 20 years with the Petaluma Police Department, rising to the rank of Sergeant. He was a “gentle giant,” a former Golden Gloves boxing champion, and a dedicated public servant who served three terms on the Board of Supervisors. During his time on the board, he championed environmental causes, including the acquisition of Tolay Lake Regional Park, and supported infrastructure improvements like the Highway 101 widening and SMART train.

Kerns is remembered for his thoughtful approach to governance and his commitment to the community. He is survived by his wife, children, sister, and grandchildren. A private celebration of life will be held.
