Save The Redwoods League Buys Up Over 1,500 Acres of Forest Near Monte Rio

A conservation group, Save the Redwoods League, has purchased 1,517 acres of redwood and Douglas fir forest near Monte Rio for $24 million.

The land will be transferred to Sonoma County Regional Parks, significantly expanding the Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve. This acquisition creates a continuous stretch of over 22,000 acres of protected land, stretching from the Bohemian Highway to the Sonoma Coast.

The property, which includes old-growth redwoods, wildlife corridors, and trails, offers stunning views and is located in the ancestral territory of the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians and the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. Funding for the purchase comes from a mix of private donations, state grants, and local tax dollars.

Limited public access is expected soon after the sale closes in late May, with a management plan to follow.
