Santa Rosa City Schools Considering Multiple School Closure Scenarios

Santa Rosa City Schools is facing tough decisions about school closures. The school board and district administrators met Friday to explore various scenarios aimed at cutting $12.5 million from the budget.

Several options were presented, including closing three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school – the so-called 3:1:1 scenario. One alternative suggests consolidating several elementary schools onto the Santa Rosa Middle School campus after its closure. Another option, dubbed the “super elementary” scenario, would create a large K-6 school by combining several elementary schools onto the Hilliard Comstock Middle School campus.

The district also explored the possibility of a 7-12 grade model, but administrators deemed this “very difficult” to implement by the next school year due to facility limitations. Trustees offered numerous additional suggestions, including exploring the closure of Santa Rosa High and consolidating it with Ridgway, and examining the impact of charter school placements on enrollment.

The board will continue discussions at their next meeting, focusing on staff layoffs and other budget reductions.
