New mail rules are now in effect at the Sonoma County jail.
This follows a lawsuit by the Human Rights Defense Center, which argued the old policy was unconstitutional. The Press Deomcrat is reporting the county settled the case, agreeing to pay $350,000. The jail must now accept mail from any publisher unless there’s a clear safety risk, and provide an appeals process for rejected deliveries.
The Human Rights Defense Center says this vindicates free speech for those incarcerated.
