Sonoma is moving forward with a powerful new 9/11 memorial at the Sonoma Valley Fire District’s Station 1.
The Press Democrat reports the Sonoma City Council unanimously approved the installation, which will feature a genuine steel beam salvaged from the World Trade Center. This significant tribute will also include a brass bell, symbolic lighting, and a plaque, creating a reflective space for the community.
Sonoma Valley Fire Chief Steve Akre called it a “really meaningful tribute.” The $57,000 project is primarily funded by the Sonoma Volunteer Firefighter’s Association, with installation expected later this year. Officials highlighted its importance as both public art and a solemn reminder of the 2001 tragedy.
