This morning, Sonoma County announced it’s suing major social media companies, including Meta, TikTok, and Google, alleging their platforms are harming local youth.
The Press Democrat reports the lawsuit claims these companies use addictive technology that contributes to mental health issues like depression and suicidality among minors. It cites local incidents of bullying, threats of violence, and even a teen being offered a gun for sale on social media. County officials say they’ve had to redirect resources to provide mental health services for young people.
The county’s lawsuit joins similar cases across the nation, with a trial possibly starting in 2026.
