Rare Deep-Sea Fish Discovered On Sonoma County Beach

A rare deep-sea creature has washed ashore on a Sonoma County beach, surprising scientists.

The Press Democrat reports Stefan Kiesbye was picking up trash at Doran Regional Park when he discovered a large, unusual fish—a hoodwinker sunfish. This species is so rare, it was only identified by scientists in 2017 and was believed to live only in the Southern Hemisphere. After Kiesbye took photos, a leading expert confirmed the discovery.

The find is helping researchers understand how these elusive fish are traveling to the Northern Hemisphere.
