A man is dead after being struck by a Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train near downtown Petaluma Friday morning.
Authorities say the crash happened around 10 a.m. near the railroad trestle bridge over a branch of the Petaluma River. Paramedics attempted lifesaving efforts, but the man died at the scene. His name has not been released. Police say they are still investigating why he was on the tracks.
Rail service was halted for several hours during the investigation.
