The Sebastopol City Council has approved an emergency just-cause eviction ordinance to protect low-income tenants in deed-restricted apartments.
The measure comes after dozens of residents at the newly built Woodmark Apartments were told to move out. The 4-0 vote establishes limits on evictions and requires relocation payments for certain no-fault terminations.
Landlords of complexes with 40 or more units cannot evict without a valid reason, and if tenants are forced out for reasons beyond their control, owners must provide assistance equal to three months’ rent or fair-market rent.
The ordinance expires January 1st, 2027.
