Sonoma State University has named Michael Spagna as its new president.
The Press Democrat reports Spagna, currently interim president at Cal Poly Humboldt, will take the helm on January 20th, 2026.
He faces the challenge of stabilizing the campus after a year of leadership changes and controversial budget cuts that eliminated academic and athletic programs. The university has secured a $90 million state allocation to help with its transformation, which Spagna will oversee.
State Senator Mike McGuire called the hire “great news,” expressing hope for a new chapter at SSU.
Spagna is the university’s fourth president since 2022.
