Sonoma County’s Permanent Supportive Housing Threatened By Federal Cuts

Permanent supportive housing for Sonoma County’s most vulnerable homeless residents is threatened by major federal cuts from the Trump administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD.

The new HUD policy prioritizes transitional housing and sharply reduces funds for long-term programs like Santa Rosa’s The Palms Inn. According to the Press Democrat, local providers warn that projects serving around 250 high-needs residents, including veterans and those with chronic illnesses, are at risk of losing essential services funding.

Providers argue the cuts ignore research showing that permanent supportive housing is critical for survival and ultimately saves communities money. Sonoma County services are now urgently trying to adapt to the drastic funding changes.
