Solo electric vehicle drivers in California can no longer use carpool lanes without a hefty fine.
Starting today, solo EV drivers could face a nearly 500 dollar fine for taking to the lane. The change ends a privilege that allowed EVs to access carpool lanes, typically meant for vehicles with two or more people.
The perks that EV drivers had, like quicker travel and discounted tolls, also end.
A 60-day grace period was offered when the rules shifted, but that time is up. The “diamond access ok” stickers are no longer valid.
