The Santa Rosa Police Department is launching a major enforcement operation targeting drivers who violate the state’s hands-free cell phone law. Under current California law, it is illegal to hold a phone or any electronic device while operating a vehicle, whether you are talking, texting, or using an app.
Police stress that your focus must be on the road. Violators face fines, and a second offense within three years will result in a point on your driving record.
The message from the police is clear: that text or social media post is not worth the risk. If you need to make a call or set directions, pull over to a safe spot. Drivers can expect more of these distracted driving operations in the coming months.
This initiative is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
