A historic 1,000-pound cornerstone, originally laid in 1884 and containing a 19th-century time capsule, has been rediscovered inside the Sonoma County courthouse after being “lost” for decades.
The Press Democrat reports the artifact, which served as a makeshift breakroom table for security staff in an off-limits area, was identified by a history-buff supervisor who recognized its significance to Santa Rosa’s past.
Officials are now planning to move the stone to the new county courthouse currently under construction, with a formal re-dedication ceremony scheduled for this March.
