Cash Clash In The 4th District

Longtime North Bay Congressman Mike Thompson is facing a rare and expensive primary challenge as he seeks a 15th term in California’s 4th District.

The Press Democrat reports political newcomer Eric Jones actually out-raised the veteran incumbent in 2025, bringing in $2.6 million compared to Thompson’s $2 million, setting the stage for what experts call the most sophisticated challenge to Thompson’s seat in decades.

The two Democrats are running on very different playbooks: Thompson relies on deep local roots, the wine industry, and established political action committees, while Jones is fueling his campaign with individual donations from the tech and venture capital sectors.

With both candidates entering the election year with nearly $2 million in cash on hand, the race for the deep-blue district is expected to be a high-stakes battle over whether voters prefer veteran experience or a fresh, outsider perspective.
