Windsor leaders are considering a double-barreled approach to rescue the town from a mounting fiscal crisis.
The Press Democrat reports officials are weighing a new tax on local businesses alongside a proposed one-cent sales tax—a first for the town—to address a projected $19 million budget shortfall.
While property taxes remain steady, steep declines in lodging and sales tax revenue, coupled with a 26% spike in policing costs, have drained town reserves. Some residents are pushing to see both tax options on the November ballot to give voters a choice in how to fix the deficit.
However, town staff caution that while a business tax adds revenue, only a sales tax offers a long-term structural fix for Windsor’s aging budget.
