A wave of Sonoma County cities is moving to cut ties with North Bay Animal Services by the end of March following a 2025 grand jury report that criticized the agency’s compliance with animal welfare laws.
Leaders in Sebastopol, Windsor, and Cloverdale are now transitioning their animal control needs to the Humane Society of Sonoma County on an interim basis while they search for a new long-term provider.
While the move aims to address serious operational concerns, officials warned during recent council meetings that the shift to the Humane Society is expected to come with a higher price tag for local taxpayers in the short term.
