Unchallenged Path for Sonoma County Schools Chief

Sonoma County Superintendent Amie Carter is set for a second term after no challengers emerged by the filing deadline for the June election.

According to the Press Democrat, Carter, the county’s first openly gay schools chief, will likely begin her next four-year term in January 2027. During her tenure, she has overseen rising graduation rates and launched a major “Literacy Promise” initiative to boost student reading levels. However, her leadership remains tested as she navigates a fiscal crisis impacting six local districts and recent tense negotiations with the teachers’ union.

Despite these challenges, Carter says she is honored to continue the work of stabilizing district finances and improving student achievement.
