Clearlake Sewer Rate Hike Shelved Following Massive Sewage Spill

The Lake County Board of Supervisors has officially postponed a massive 120% sewer rate increase for at least six months to focus on the recovery from January’s 2.9-million gallon spill.

According to the Press Democrat, Supervisor Bruno Sabatier led the delay, arguing it is inappropriate to nearly double residents’ bills while many on Robin Lane still lack access to clean, potable water. The proposed hike would have jumped monthly costs from $45 to $90 in the first year alone to address a $1.1 million budget deficit and failing 30-year-old infrastructure.

While officials warn that the system’s reserves are depleted after spending over $1 million on the recent emergency response, the board agreed that asking for more money just ten weeks after a major disaster was premature. Residents and local leaders are now calling for full transparency and a clear prevention plan before any future rate hikes are reconsidered.

This six-month window is intended to allow the county to wrap up its spill response and provide a more accurate accounting of the utility’s financial health.
