A state appellate court has dealt a major blow to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, ruling that deputies must comply with subpoenas issued by the county’s civilian oversight agency. The decision centers on a whistleblower investigation involving four employees, marking the first time IOLERO has used the expanded powers granted by voters under Measure P.
Per the Press Democrat, the 27-page ruling effectively rejects arguments from the Sheriff’s Office and the deputies’ union that labor agreements limited the watchdog’s investigative reach. IOLERO Director John Alden says the ruling finally allows the agency to move forward with oversight “as the voters intended.”
Sheriff Eddie Engram says he is reviewing the order but noted it remains subject to further appeal. The case is being watched closely across California, as it sets a major precedent for how much authority civilian boards have over elected sheriffs and their departments.
