Cotati is joining a growing list of North Bay cities taking a stand against federal immigration crackdowns. Following a joint meeting this week, city leaders have directed staff to draft resolutions that would prohibit ICE from using publicly-owned properties for enforcement activities.
According to the Press Democrat, the move follows emotional testimony from residents who say they fear for their families’ safety during federal operations. While the new rules wouldn’t stop federal agents from making arrests on city land, they aim to reaffirm state laws that limit local police cooperation with immigration authorities.
Police Chief Chris Simmons told the board his priority remains the safety and de-escalation of the local community. The city is also looking into a broader response plan as they wait for Sonoma County to release its own regional guidelines.
