Santa Rosa Schools Rename Spring Holiday

Santa Rosa City Schools is officially turning the page on its March 31st holiday, voting to rename the day “Farmworkers Day.”

The school board approved the change Wednesday night, stripping labor leader Cesar Chavez’s name from the district calendar following recent allegations of sexual misconduct.

The move follows a similar statewide shift by Governor Gavin Newsom to refocus the holiday on the broader labor movement. District officials say the new name allows the community to continue honoring the essential work of agricultural laborers while distancing the schools from the controversy surrounding Chavez.
