SMART train officials have given the green light to extend free fares for seniors and local youth through mid-2027. The decision comes as the agency reports a massive 65% increase in overall ridership since the program began, with young people and seniors now making up nearly half of all passengers.
The Marin Independent Journal reports despite giving away hundreds of thousands of rides, SMART says actual fare revenue from paying adults has surprisingly jumped by 16%. Board Chair Chris Coursey noted the program is effectively “training the next generation” of commuters to use the North Bay rail system.
The extension arrives just months before voters decide on Measure B this June, a 30-year extension of the sales tax that keeps the trains running. While critics argue the system relies too heavily on taxpayer subsidies, supporters say the growing ridership is a clear sign the train is becoming a vital part of the community.
