War In Middle East Triggers Global Supply Shock For North Bay Farmers

North Bay farmers are facing a severe financial squeeze this spring as conflict in the Strait of Hormuz disrupts global energy and fertilizer supplies.

Per the Press Democrat, local dairies and vineyards are being hammered by a “dual cost shock,” with diesel prices and fertilizer surcharges skyrocketing just as planting season begins.

Experts warn that the disruption of Persian Gulf shipping is fracturing the agricultural value chain, forcing some growers to choose between absorbing massive losses or reducing crop yields. Unlike other businesses, local farmers say they cannot pass these rising costs on to consumers, leading to “crippling” pressure on family-run operations.

While federal aid packages have been deployed in the past, local agricultural leaders fear smaller growers may be left behind in this latest global crisis.
