Sonoma Valley Schools to Provide Critical Layoff Update

The Sonoma Valley Unified School District is set to provide a major update this Thursday regarding potential staff layoffs and the future of local campuses.

Trustees will meet at 4:30 p.m. at Sonoma City Chambers to discuss the fate of dozens of positions, following a February vote to cut the equivalent of 40 full-time jobs by July. While affected employees were notified last month, the board has until May 15th to finalize these difficult budget decisions.

Beyond the staffing crisis, the agenda is packed with high-profile items, including the proposed renaming of Altimira Middle School and a $10.5 million energy modernization plan. The board is also expected to decide whether to renew its oversight agreement with Woodland Charter School.

Residents can attend in person or tune in via Zoom, with the main open session and public comment period expected to begin around 6:00 p.m.
