Four years after voters approved Measure P to expand sheriff oversight, the relationship between the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and its watchdog agency, IOLERO, remains deeply fractured.
Per the Press Democrat, while a dedicated observation room was built at headquarters for civilian investigators to monitor deputy interviews, officials reveal the room has never been used.
IOLERO Director John Alden accuses the Sheriff’s Office of subverting the law by not disclosing interview schedules and ignoring subpoenas, while Sheriff Eddie Engram questions if independent oversight is still necessary given modern transparency laws. The standoff has cost taxpayers nearly $400,000 in legal fees and sparked a potential new ballot measure to clarify the watchdog’s powers.
Board of Supervisors Chair Rebecca Hermosillo says she is working to bring stakeholders together to finally “honor the promise” of the 2020 vote.
