Windsor is launching a pilot project this summer to improve cyclist safety at the congested intersection of Old Redwood Highway and Lakewood Drive.
According to the Press Democrat, the Town Council approved a plan to install 13 standing bollards to prevent drivers from drifting into the bike lane while waiting to turn right. Currently, heavy traffic often forces vehicles into the cycling path, leading to frequent “near-misses” and a recent collision involving a fire engine.
The $3,000 project will upgrade the area to a Class-IV bike lane, providing a physical barrier between cars and cyclists. To measure success, traffic engineers will conduct camera-based studies before and after the installation to track safety improvements.
While the council voted 4-1 in favor, Council member Mike Wall dissented due to concerns over increased camera surveillance in the area. Local officials hope the new markers will finally curb “dangerous merging” at one of the town’s most notorious bottlenecks.
