Mowing Begins at SDC Amid Rising Fire Fears

Crews from the California Conservation Corps finally began clearing overgrown brush and weeds at the Sonoma Developmental Center this week.

The Sonoma Index-Tribune reports the move follows a month of mounting anxiety from Eldridge residents who warned that the neglected 180-acre campus has become a massive fire hazard.

Beyond the dry grass, neighbors have reported broken windows and unsecured buildings, raising serious safety and trespassing concerns. Adding to the tension, the Sonoma Valley Fire District confirmed that on-site hydrants are currently inoperable due to a water main break.

While the state is reportedly finalizing a long-term maintenance contract, fire officials are currently relying on additional water tenders to protect the site as fire season approaches.
