Sonoma County Weighs Major Funding Overhaul for Code Enforcement

Sonoma County officials are debating a significant shift in how code enforcement is funded, moving away from a system of fines and fees toward general fund support.

The proposed overhaul would require approximately $2.2 million to cover essential staffing and operations. Critics of the current model argue that relying on penalties creates a “pay-to-play” atmosphere, while county leaders warn that finding new revenue is a challenge in a tight budget year.

The division is responsible for tackling zoning violations, hazardous properties, and illegal business operations throughout the county.

While the proposal aims to create a more equitable system, the plan remains under review as officials look for ways to balance the books.
