Mayra Aguilar, a twenty-one-year-old Windsor resident, is breaking barriers as one of the youngest people ever to serve on a California civil grand jury.
Per the Press Democrat, the UC Berkeley graduate and aspiring attorney joined the nineteen-member volunteer watchdog panel last year, where she works alongside colleagues who are decades her senior.
Despite initial nerves, Aguilar rose to the challenge, serving as a committee chair and helping investigate local government agencies to ensure transparency and efficiency. Presiding Judge Christopher Honigsberg praised her determination, noting that younger voices add a vital perspective to the objective oversight of public departments.
As the jury prepares to release its final investigative findings this June, Aguilar is encouraging other young people to apply for the next term before the May 10th deadline.
She says the experience has not only bolstered her legal aspirations but has proven that every generation deserves a voice in local government.
