Windsor leaders are weighing a major policy shift to pave the way for a potential third Sonoma County Costco.
According to the Press Democrat, the Town Council directed staff this week to explore exempting large retailers from a 2022 ban on new gas stations, a hurdle the big-box giant considers a “non-starter” for new locations.
Proponents argue a Costco could generate millions in tax revenue to help fix a looming multi-million dollar budget deficit and stop “retail leakage” to neighboring cities. However, environmental advocates are urging the council to stick to its climate goals and maintain the ban on new fueling stations. While no formal talks have occurred with the retailer and available land remains scarce, the move signals Windsor is officially open for business.
If approved, it would mark a significant reversal in the regional effort to limit fossil fuel infrastructure.
