The future of Sonoma County’s law enforcement watchdog, IOLERO, is taking center stage in the race for the Board of Supervisors.
Per the Press Democrat, candidates Melanie Bagby and Tom Schwedhelm are offering clashing visions on how to resolve a years-long legal stalemate between the agency and the Sheriff’s Office over independent investigative powers.
While Bagby calls for “full-throated” support to implement the voter-approved Measure P, Schwedhelm—a former police chief—favors a more collaborative process to avoid further litigation. The stakes are rising as IOLERO’s director prepares to depart and the Sheriff’s Office moves to appeal a recent court loss to the state Supreme Court.
With two open seats on the board, this June’s election will likely decide whether the county leans into aggressive civilian oversight or seeks a new compromise at the ballot box.
