Bay Area Air District Split Over Looming Gas Water Heater Ban

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is deeply divided over a first-in-the-nation rule that would ban the sale of new natural gas water heaters starting January 1st.

The Bay Area News Group reports board members are weighing the environmental benefits against a steep price tag, with heat pump models costing homeowners an average of $3,500 more than traditional gas units. Supporters argue the shift is vital for public health, claiming it could prevent dozens of deaths and thousands of asthma attacks caused by nitrogen oxide emissions.

However, several local mayors and supervisors on the board are calling for a delay, citing soaring costs of living and a lack of available rebates under the current administration. Staff have suggested potential compromises, including pushing the start date to 2027 and offering exemptions for low-income residents or those facing expensive electrical upgrades.

A final, high-stakes vote to determine whether the mandate moves forward or is delayed is now set for October.
